Plan a trip to the Green McAdoo Cultural Center in Clinton, Tennessee, this spring to visit the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, Voices and Votes: Democracy in America. The free exhibit, running March 28-May 6, 2023, examines the history of American democracy as well as the revision our democracy demands as we continue to question and shape the future of the country.

From the American Revolution to women’s suffrage to the Civil Rights Movement and more, Voices and Votes takes a closer look at the ever-evolving story of democracy in our country, including the struggles to gain and maintain the right to vote and participate in government. Through historical and contemporary photography, archival video, historical memorabilia and interactive multimedia, the exhibit invites visitors to reflect on what it means to be an American and to hold an active role in shaping the government of both community and country.

Voices and Votes: Democracy in America is based on a major exhibition currently on display at the National Museum of American History called American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith. The traveling exhibit is part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program, which brings exhibitions like these and other programming to small towns and rural communities across the country through local museums, historical societies and other cultural venues.
