5 Delightful Detours to Take on Your Next Tennessee Road Trip
Planning a fall road trip? Consider taking the scenic route on one of the five Tennessee roads that have recently been designated as either National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The following routes join the list of 144 other American roads recognized for their archeological, cultural, historical, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.
1. Great River Road
This West Tennessee route follows the Mississippi River from Tiptonville to Memphis and is part of the Great River Road, which passes through 10 states from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.
2. Sequatchie Valley National Scenic Byway
Take in beautiful views of the Sequatchie River, Cumberland Plateau and Walden’s Ridge on this scenic byway through an area dubbed Tennessee’s “Great Valley.”

3. Cumberland National Scenic Byway
Stretching between the Cumberland Gap and the Cumberland River, this route connects eight counties in the Upper Cumberland region and offers stunning views along the way.
4. Norris Freeway
Located near Knoxville, this route passes the town of Norris and Norris Dam State Park, an area known for great hiking, fishing and boating.

5. Newfound Gap Road
This historic route in East Tennessee is the lowest drivable pass through Great Smoky Mountains National Park from Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to Cherokee, North Carolina.
