Moon Pie Celebrates a Century
For 100 years, people have been enjoying the s’mores-inspired Moon Pie, packed with chocolate-marshmallow-graham goodness. But do you know how this iconic Tennessee treat got its start?
In 1917, a traveling salesman for the Chattanooga Bakery – Moon Pie’s creator – was asked by a Kentucky coal miner for a “snack as big as the moon.” He returned with the Moon Pie, which proved an instant hit since it was filling, delicious and fit perfectly in the coal miners’ lunch pails.
Throughout the decades, Moon Pie’s popularity grew, as well as its sizes and flavors. Today, the snack is more loved than ever, with approximately 1 million pies produced per day. Not only can you enjoy the original Moon Pie, but also delicious flavors including salted caramel, strawberry, banana and vanilla.
