A great pound cake, that staple of many a church supper and family gathering, is a true Southern delicacy, steeped in the tradition of old family recipes and made with love. Judy Douglass knows that tradition, and she has been baking pound cakes her whole life. Using her mother’s recipe, Douglass made cakes for friends and loved ones during the holidays and offered them as comfort food when words simply wouldn’t work. She took them to tailgate parties and church picnics. They were such a hit that her friends began to ask Douglass to make her delicious cakes for their own special occasions, which resulted in her Memphis-based business, Judy Pound Cakes.
For the last 10 years, Douglass has marketed her cakes by word of mouth, and now she sells them online as well as in local Memphis shops and at select Whole Foods stores around the Southeast.
Along with traditional Just Plain Ol’ Poundcake, she offers a number of other flavors, including cinnamon pecan, chocolate cayenne and lemon, available in 6-inch round (serves six to eight) and 10-inch round (serves 12 to 20). As Douglass knows, pound cakes make great gifts and sweet additions to any gathering. Heck, just have a slice for breakfast! Seasonal shapes and varieties are available as well.

Pound cakes are my favorite dessert. With Judy’s generous offer, I could have Judy’s pound cake & I promise to eat it, too. Since I am unable to cook as I have in the past when everyone came to our house for holidays, wouldn’t everyone be be in wonderment that “I” brought the dessert for Christmas, as our children take turns hosting holidays. But I will be honest & tell them Judy baked it for me so that it will seem like “ole times”. Just sorry that me late husband will not be with us. He now lives in heaven.
