Kayaking with Lambs author Brian D. Miller

A new book by Brian D. Miller, a Roane County Farm Bureau member, gives readers a glimpse into what life is like as a Tennessee farmer. Published Oct. 1, 2023, Kayaking With Lambs: Notes From an East Tennessee Farmer draws on Miller’s own experiences in rural East Tennessee, where he raises sheep and hogs on a 70-acre farm alongside his partner, Cindy. The book is written as a series of meditative notes reflecting on Miller’s efforts to live in harmony with nature in purpose and stewardship.

Structured as a breviary broken down into the eight monastic offices of the day, Kayaking With Lambs ponders the cycles of life, family heritage and learning to live in sync with the planet in a meaningful way. And, of course, Miller also shares many moments from his farming journey in which he found himself in entirely unexpected circumstances – like kayaking with lambs, for example.
