You may be familiar with the old American tune “Way Down Yonder in the Pawpaw Patch,” but do you know exactly what pawpaws are?

Maury County Farm Bureau member Anthony Petrochko became infatuated with the exotic fruit known as pawpaws and now has a patch of his own, right off the square in Columbia.

Pawpaws belong to the tropical fruit family. Some believe they’re a mix between bananas and mangos, but they have the ability to grow in northern climates. Because of their late summer ripening period and short shelf life, they are not as well-known as other summer fruits. However, pawpaws are perfect for sweet summer treats like ice cream because of their silky, custardlike texture.

You can find the fruit in the wild on pawpaw trees throughout the state in late August and early September. Petrochko also opens his patch to visitors by appointment during the season, which is typically the month of August. The season is short, and quantities are limited. To confirm fruit availability and set up a time to visit, email pawpawsaplenty@gmail.com.
