Unicoi County 4-H Maps Success
Unicoi County 4-H’ers have taken home the gold in GPS.
The students were recognized as national award winners for their global positioning satellite (GPS) project where they mapped the Appalachian Trail around their hometown. As part of the project, the 4-H’ers walked 60 miles of Unicoi County’s gorgeous hiking trails, carrying GPS units that tracked their locations. They then created a map, split into five sections, that gives hikers instructions on how to find trailheads by looking at GPS coordinates.
The project shows how technology can work with nature to help people become more involved in both the technological and outdoor worlds. And with the advances in today’s agriculture world, it’s very likely the students will go on to use GPS technology in their future careers.
