Dickson County Farm Bureau member Katie Collins is the first Tennessee 4-H’er to win the national 4-H Youth in Action Award.

Collins grew up on her family’s century farm in Dickson raising dairy cattle and being very active in 4-H. As she moved into her high school 4-H career, she knew she wanted to make a difference outside of her livestock project. Collins started a mentorship program called “See Yourself in Agriculture” for middle schoolers to tour farms and agriculture businesses in and around Dickson County to help them picture themselves working in ag.

“I wanted to help young people connect farms and their food and we did that by bringing them directly to farms and businesses,” Collins says. “It was rewarding to hear the participants say they learned about agriculture and found new opportunities for their careers.”

Collins submitted the “See Yourself in Agriculture” project to compete with other service projects from 4-H’ers across the country for the 4-H Youth in Action Award. Each year, four winners are selected, and Collins is the first from Tennessee to receive this most prestigious award. With the honor, she will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

Collins participated in Dickson County 4-H and served on the Tennessee 4-H State Council. She is currently a sophomore at the University of Tennessee studying food and agriculture business. Long term, she hopes to pursue agriculture law.
