Hatch Show Prints Last Test of Time
If you’re a fan of country music, it’s likely that you’ve seen a concert poster made by Hatch Show Print Co. of Nashville. But did you know that this company is considered one of the oldest working letterpress shops in the country?
Founded in 1879, the Hatch Co. prides itself on maintaining – even today – the simplistic, yet graphically inviting look of posters found some 100 years ago.
And its employees share in the craft, by painstakingly creating each poster one by one. In fact, the shop’s newest print machine dates back to 1967, and the letterpress process – utilizing hand-carved wood blocks and metal photo plates – originated in the 15th century. Yet the shop still manages to complete some 600 print jobs each year – a mighty feat considering the elbow grease required.
