Plenty of Hoopla at Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame
It’s not often that a basketball becomes a focal point for a city skyline, but such is the case in downtown Knoxville.
A 30-foot-tall basketball graces the entrance to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and the 20,000-pound round ball is clearly visible to motorists traveling near the intersection of I-40 and I-75. The gigantic structure was built to resemble an actual regulation basketball, down to the 96,000 “nubs” covering its fiberglass surface.
The unique sculpture even sits atop a glass staircase that looks remarkably like a basketball net. Minneapolis-based HSC Scenic Services designed and built the unusual landmark.
