Visit a True Southern Plantation
Published May 05, 2008

Enjoy the spring weather at Oakslea Place in Jackson.

I visited a hidden treasure over the weekend. Even though I’ve spent a great deal of time in Jackson, Tennessee, I’d never visited the Oakslea Place on Highland Avenue. Even though it’s close to the hustle and bustle of downtown Jackson, this stately home has a serene, relaxing feel.

We had lunch in the Viola Room, which is perfect for group dining. You can also eat in the plantation tearoom, which has windows that highlight the extensive gardens outdoors. The owners also offer daily afternoon tea in the Rhett Cafe (an homage to Gone With the Wind). The menu continues the Gone With the Wind theme; all the dishes have names like “Rhett,” “Ashley” and “Scarlett.”

For those looking for an overnight stay, the Oaklsea Place has several suites available in the historic home, which is estimated to be more than 150 years old. It’s marked as one of the oldest surviving homes in Madison County, and its tall ceilings, unique doors and breathtaking staircase speak well to the beauty found in homes during the 1800s. For more information about Oakslea Place, call (731) 554-1760‎.

Spring and early summer are a perfect time to visit bed and breakfasts across the state. Most have gorgeous landscaping, and with flowers in full bloom, what better time to go! Be sure to comment below about your favorite B&Bs in Tennessee.
