Visitors to the Lost Sea hike through the caverns to reach the lake.

Every year, 180,000 visitors go inside a mountain to see the sea. America’s largest underground lake, known as the Lost Sea, lies deep within Craighead Caverns near Sweetwater.

The caverns are so expansive that a two-story building could fit inside each of several rooms. The lake covers 4.5 acres, but divers have yet to discover the limits of the waters beneath.

Tour guides narrate the cave’s colorful history during hikes through the caverns to the lake, where glass-bottomed boats carry visitors onto the water.

Tours are available year-round, and a glassblower, sweet shop, general store, and restaurant operate during the spring and summer. For more information, visit www.thelostsea.com.
