Artisan Treasures Found in Appalachia
Published Sep 01, 2006
Looking for something a little different for your home? Consider a trip to the Smokies for treasures that are quite literally off the beaten path.
Treasures of Appalachia in Cosby is a not-for-profit storefront for about 50 regional artisans and musicians.
Here you’ll find saw blades painted with rural landscapes, deer antlers used as basket handles and some local banjo music sure to set your toes a-tappin’.
Doug Bittinger, president of Treasures of Appalachia, says visitors come to the shop looking for an authentic souvenir of their travels.
“They don’t want to go home with a statuette of a bear that was made in China. They want something that was made in the Smoky Mountains,” Bittinger says.
If you’re headed that way, be sure to check out the homemade apple pie-making contest going on at the fourth annual Treasures of Appalachia Apple Pickin’ Days, Sept. 8-9. For more information call (423) 487-3111 or visit treasuresofappalachia.com.
