O Christmas Tree …
Published Dec 01, 2005

“Choose Tennessee” this Christmas and you’ll make a lot of state tree farmers happy.

* The 30 member farms of the Tennessee Christmas Tree Growers Association grow a variety of trees, offering pre-cut, choose-and-cut, or balled and burlapped options.
* 80 percent of Tennessee’s tree farms are small family-owned operations, with less than 12 acres.
* Pines are the No. 1 choice among Tennesseans – White, Virginia and Scotch varieties. A typical 7- to 8-foot tree is 10 years old. Trees grow an average of one foot per year after the three-year seedling stage.
* East Tennessee grows spruce and firs; Middle Tennessee grows Leland cypress, Virginia pine and Scotch pine; West Tennessee grows Virginia pine, white pine and Leland cypress.
