Farm-Fresh Firs to Go
Published Dec 01, 2007
Christmas trees are big business. Especially here in Tennessee. With more than 14,000 trees sold each year, the state ranks 14th in the nation for Christmas tree production.
Nationwide, consumers still prefer to purchase their tree directly from a farm (27 percent, according to a recent survey). Nineteen percent buy their tree from a nursery or garden center, 16 percent purchase from a chain store, 13 percent from a retail lot. Nonprofit groups sell 8 percent of the nation’s trees, while grocery stores sell 5 percent. The remainder surveyed listed their sources as “other” or “don’t know.”
