Timing for Trees
Published Sep 01, 2007
When planting trees, timing is everything. And, according to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA), autumn is the ideal time for transplanting trees, shrubs, bulbs and other perennials.
Plus, if you prefer trees that display rich fall hues, autumn planting allows you to see each tree’s color before buying. TDA recommends planting anytime between now and when the ground is frozen hard. As long as the ground is soft, it’s not too late to plant.

I am looking to start a cherry orchard in west TN. I have heard that it is best to plant in the fall, but I am not for certain if spring would be better. Any clues?
