Starter Plant Business Sprouted from Tiny Seeds
Published Jun 01, 2005

In hopes of earning a little extra income, newlyweds Livingston and Bonnie Paulk planted two pounds of cabbage seed in their Alabama garden in 1918 and sold the resulting crops to local merchants.

The following year, they planted 25 pounds of cabbage seed.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

The Paulks soon discovered a market for lots of green growing things – far more than cabbages. Today’s Bonnie Plant Farm is a mega force in the nursery business, with nearly $50 million in annual sales and 33 growing stations, including two in Tennessee. Buy a starter plant for your garden; odds are you’ll spot the Bonnie Plant Farm label.

Located in Bells and Knoxville, the Tennessee stations grow perennials, fruits and vegetables and distribute Bonnie crops to Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, Kmart, The Home Depot, and other independent garden, seed and hardware stores.
