Fall Gardening

Don’t let cool weather wipe out your garden. These helpful fall gardening tips from the experts at the University of Tennessee Gardens will help you prepare for the colder seasons:

  • Collect seed of any annuals you want to grow again the next year. Allow them to dry completely before storing.
  • Be sure to bring tropical plants and houseplants in before frost, as they don’t enjoy being outdoors when temperatures drop into the 40s.
  • Plant ornamental kale and Swiss chard in the fall, preferably October. They add to your landscape and are edible.
  • Plant new trees and shrubs in the fall since dormant plants will be under less stress. A thorough initial watering is very important, but freshly planted deciduous plants require almost no watering through the winter.
