Henpeck Village Market Gives Franklin a True Taste of the South

The corner of Henpeck Lane and Lewisburg Pike in Williamson County is an eye popper. Go to the corner market down the street, we were told. Best oatmeal cookies in the universe.

Well, I expected your run-of-the-mill convenience store. Which certainly isn’t the Henpeck Village Market, with its generous front porch and charming wood trim. In fact, this market looks more like a home – which, it turns out, is exactly what it is. Owners Don and Jackie Gregory live upstairs.

The Gregorys bought the market a year ago, when it was more of a cigarette and beer stop. They continued the tradition of offering breakfast and lunch, but made a lot of other changes.

The Biscuit Lady

One constant, though, is 76-year-old Lizzie Mai Jackson, who has been working there for 14 years.

Her specialty is biscuits. She comes in at 4:30 a.m. and makes biscuits and breakfast, which can include country ham and pork tenderloin. She starts lunch, which could be turnip greens, lima beans, meatloaf, barbecue made on the premises, or chicken and dumplings. New to the menu: salads with fresh herbs, pimento salad and potato croquettes.

I was fascinated with the cold cases, a take-out dream. I wanted the tomato basil soup, but the heavy cream wasn’t on my diet. Instead, I chose the chicken salad (perfect) and brought barbecue, potato salad and chocolate cake home for my boys for lunch. All were a hit, particularly the barbecue.

And the prices? Two Biscuits are $1.49. A meat-and-two plate lunch is $8.95.

How to get to Henpeck Market

From I-65 between Columbia and Franklin, take exit 61 – the Peytonsville Road exit. Go west to 431 (Lewisburg Pike). Turn right, go north 1 mile and you’re there.

      Marvelle,
Your best chance of getting hold of that oatmeal raisin cookie recipe is to give the folks at Henpeck Market a call. I’m not sure if they’ll be able to help you, but they might. Here is their number: (615) 807-2117.

      Hope this helps,

We enjoyed an evening out with our friends at Henpeck Market a week after they opened under new management. We enjoyed a wonderful meal and great musical entertainment. I have recommended eating at Henpeck to all our friends. The new managers are so nice and friendly and the food was delicious. When you visit there be sure and check out their outside patio for dining and their big screen t.v. 🙂
