White Lily and Martha White Flour

Did you know that two major flour companies, used frequently during the holiday baking season, are based in Tennessee? Both White Lily and Martha White call the Volunteer State home.

Many Southerners consider White Lily the best flour for making biscuits. The company originated in Knoxville, milling there for 125 years, before moving its headquarters to Memphis.

Also headquartered in Memphis is Martha White, which Richard Lindsey founded in Nashville in 1899 and named for his daughter. Also known for its cornmeal and cornbread mixes, the company has a connection to country music through its status as the longest-running sponsor of the Grand Ole Opry.
