The national competition encouraged teams of students from kindergarten through fifth grade to plant, harvest and raise peas, with a win to the class that produced the most using no more than 20 pea seeds. Carrie Smith’s third-grade class at Cason Lane harvested 2 cups from the plants they grew from March 1 through May 16.

As their grand prize, Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell, who was present when the contest began in February, visited with the students at Batey Farms in Murfreesboro and read them the companion book, First Peas to the Table by Susan Grigsby.
